Questions & Answers About Dental Sedation
Wanting to reduce your dental phobia but still have questions about sedation dentistry? The office of Riverview sedation dentist Dr. Bynum is happy to answer them. Some of the questions we hear most frequently from patients with dental phobia or other concerns include:
How Safe Is Dental Sedation?
As with any medical procedure, taking any kind of medicine like the sedatives used in sedation dentistry has inherent risks. That’s why it is so important to choose a certified dental sedation practice like Five Star Dental Care. Dr. Bynum’s years of experience providing sedation dentistry further minimizes the likelihood of any complications arising, and his trained staff provide the careful monitoring and attention required during any dental sedation visit. It’s also reassuring to know the entire staff is certified by the American Heart Association for Basic Life Support, with Dr. Bynum also holding Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.
With a caring and educated team surrounding you, you’ll be able to truly relax, safe and comfortable throughout your dental visit.
Will I Feel Pain?
No. The sedatives used in conscious sedation not only reduce feelings of anxiety and dental phobia, they also increase the body’s tolerance to pain, allowing you to be complete relaxed and calm throughout your procedure.
What Will I Remember? Why Is There Amnesia?
Sedatives create feelings of euphoria or relaxation, and reduce the sensations of anxiety or fear. Because this can lead to a dreamlike state of relaxation, the brain doesn’t create memories, producing a temporary amnesiac effect for the duration of the dental sedation.
How Quickly Does Sedation Wear Off?
While “laughing gas” sedation wears off within minutes of discontinuing the flow, the sedatives used in oral conscious dental sedation last between two and six hours. In these cases, you will take a small, easy-to-swallow pill an hour before your appointment so that you’re relaxed and ready when you arrive at our Brandon FL dental office. While this will require you to have someone to drive you to and from the dental office, most patients will be able to quickly return to normal activities without pain or grogginess after their procedure is completed.
What Medications Are Used? What Side Effects Are There?
The oral sedatives used for sedation dentistry are called benzodiazepines. These drugs relax the body’s muscles, reduce anxiety, alleviate dental phobia and induce forgetfulness of the dental procedure.
While drug dependency and withdrawal symptoms can occur with these kinds of drugs, those side effects can only happen over repeated, regular, and prolonged use. With the short and focused time they are used in dental sedation, these negative side effects do not occur.
Will My Insurance Cover Dental Sedation?
It depends on the plan. While some treatments are not covered by insurance, Dr. Bynum’s dental team will work with you to determine what is covered by your insurance plan and then review the financial implications of any dental sedation offered. We don’t want financial concerns to be a barrier to you receiving vital dental care, which is why we have relationships with third-party financing companies CareCredit and Springstone to offer financing and low monthly payment options so you can get the care you need.
